Title: Oil Leakage from Differential Bolts
Problem: A street rod differential was recently overhauled. However, there are several oil leaks coming from the differential housing. Why are there leaks, and how can they be eliminated?
Solution: Oil will often leak around the threads of a bolt, especially if the bolt threads come into contact with a pressurized area. Some differentials may have bolts indexing with the inside of differential case. To eliminate oil leaking past the threads of the bolt, always wrap the bolt threads with Teflon tape or other sealer. See arrow in photo. This method will seal the bolts and stop all oil leakage around the bolt threads. Keep in mind that other bolts may index with oil in other components such as the engine oil pan. This problem is even more noticeable if the oil area is under a pressure such as crankcase pressure.
